... but they do better.

Thirty years ago, I messed around a bit in student drama, and for a few weeks a year we were allowed to get our hands on the local professional theatre.

Thirty years on, our daughter has gone to the same university, and yesterday we sat in the very same theatre to watch a show she was involved in. OK, I made my contribution to my shows from the lighting box and she was in the orchestra pit, but I have to say, it was eerie and a little emotional - circle of life stuff, the passing of the torch to a new generation, etc etc.

Especially as those few weeks thirty years ago pretending to be professional stand out as the high point by a clear margin of my involvement in drama. Never since have I had the opportunity to be involved in something of that standard...

... but there's no doubt in my mind my daughter's generation are achieving a higher standard than we did.

Does not being able to beat my 8 year old at Mario Kart anymore count.

A few things. No real surprise that they should take to the same things I took to, genetics and all that. And yes, they are better at them than me, apart from cycling but that may be because they don't do a lot.

Throw....very nearly. I used to have an awesome arm. A bad mountain bike crash smashed both shoulders and I haven't been the same since. It's still good though so today at the beach I was troubled to see he was very, very close. Next year I reckon!

He's always had a good arm himself. He was banned from playing dodgeball at his previous school!

Oh, and maths. Poor little guy is only just 13 and already I can't help him!

strange one this, I'm not so sure, for example not the best example but here goes,... I played football growning up and I was good but still only had one opportunity at making it pro, I know around 7 families whos kids play football or they run football teams, now from what I see/seen on facebook these kids have been to peterborough, chelsea, wolves, norwich and others playing aganist junior teams connected to the clubs, or been on some type of trial, now being away for a few years I honestly thought these kids were of a good level, now over the year I had a chance to see most of the teams play and the level is at best average, but there are ample opportunities of getting connected to pro teams but not necessary anything to do with talent...although the set ups even at junior levels is much more professional looking-feeling than it was in my day....
.

My youngest lad is like me, loves football, not interested in other sports at all. I agree, it's so well structured today, there were not junior teams affiliated to "proper" football clubs when I was a kid. I struggled through teams and eventually played semi-pro at 24 (7th level) and had to attend umpteen trials, all through me asking to get anywhere, I think I was 40+ before I gained any coaching qualifications. My lad was spotted at 7! He'll play higher than me but not pro, he plays all over the North and often one of the teams he plays for do continental tours, it's wonderful for them. Same for coaching, my son is now FA 1 & 2 qualified and runs an under 11 team, at 17!

Pretty sure my boy is ahead of me at maths at his age, he's year 6 doing year 10 stuff.

I was so worried when he was born, and so relieved now.

I'm not sure many people will make sense of that, but there it is.
