There's only enough fertilizer for another 50 harvests.
That's a world total. Which will get us first?

That IS depressing. I'm surprised, though, that the photo list didn't include one of a motorway choked with vehicles and covered with smog.

Stop the bus, i wanna get off.

The most poignant thing tho is that it points out that we are trying to help the developing world by inflicting our failing unsustainable ecological model on them. Hardly learning from our mistakes are we?

I honestly don't think we can recover from it and my sympathy lies not with mankind but with the other species on this planet who we have and continue to inflict this on, and my heart bleeds for this beautiful one in a trillion planet we are destroying.

I have often wondered why we spend billions on space exploration, rather than redirecting the cash to save the planet. I think I now know the answer. "They" know we can't save it and they are desperately looking for another planet where we can start again. I pray we don't find it because we would just inflict the same failing unsustainable ecological model on it, and ultimately kill it. Maybe the film Avatar ain't so far fetched.

Good, the human race is stupid, selfish and dangerous, it will serve us all right, and only a sap would think it was depressing.

Unfortunately, a bit like the curry from last night that won't quite go away, some of us buggers will survive and continue to inflict chaos and general stupidity on the planet and the rest of it's inhabitants.

Only so long as we're the dominant species though.

Modern life would make it hard for many to actually adjust. Think of the effects/disruption caused by a burst gas/water main or power failure.

I meant in a general sense, although I did get some chicken pakora on the way home from the pub, so it isn't all entirely theoretical!

@buggi

If it makes sense, there are lot of good people that have helped rehabilitate many places across the World once thought to have been lost to exploitation. Animal and plant species once expected to be gone have recovered. Sustainable practices are now part of the vocabulary. I used to despair until I saw re-generation and re-growth becoming more commonplace. Who would have thought softwood can be harvested from plantations which were seeded for this very purpose. Laws and quotes have come in and have stopped the wanton wastage of the past both on land and sea. In some cases we had to introduce culling to maintain numbers at a manageable levels.

Yes, the battle continues but folks fighting back and many cases winning.

Depressing indeed. Sometimes I feel excessively guilty that I have brought a child into the world - I suspect that life may well become unpleasant for his generation and beyond.

Although I have for the most part (and thus far) enjoyed my 52 years on this planet, I do despair for it's future. Most of the problems seem to stem from human greed, and religion. Things are getting bad and I can only see them getting a lot worse.
I don't believe in any of this afterlife or reincarnation guff, and I hope I am correct. I don't really want to come back to this planet and the future that it is facing!
Best make the most of what we have just now, because it isn't going to last forever.
Happy Easter all .

There is a strong case for giving up but I think we need to strive to make the world a better place and the people in it more pleasant to each other. There are some that will never alter their selfish mind-set but most people are kind and honest and lovely, so there is hope and there is a future. It will just be a slightly different one to the one we can imagine now. The planet has the ability to absorb and adapt to harm and overcome things by that adaption and will continue to do so whatever man throws at it so in the long-term whether mankind survives or not things will change and resolve themselves..

It isn't hopeless but the status quo view of the planet before the Industrial Revolution world has gone forever- technology and development and evolution does that.

We can never go back, only forward so let's enjoy the journey and hope and work towards a better future than the bleakness of war and famine and destruction.

The silent majority of good people can overcome anything if pushed. The world is still a lovely place to be @buggi and there are some lovely people in it who make it all worthwhile.
