I work nights and though I only live a mile from work I sometimes take my Mtb and on the ride home in the morning sometimes get the urge to cycle for miles but never do  I just like to get home quicker get to bed quicker and have a ride when I get up but thats just me Im sure youll be fine on your commute though.

I do 12hr nights 7pm-7am and the ride home in the morning is the best part of the night (closely followed by the ride in). I only do 10 miles each way but if you have been used to doing 17 miles I can't see the change in time of commute making a difference to the effort required.

Same here, can be a bugger getting going in the morning to get home but one doesn't fall asleep in the saddle.
Can help you sleep when you get home too:smile:

Well a few set of night shifts in and I can honestly say it's not a problem at all. In fact The commute home after nights is probably my favourite of the lot...
Quality of sleep after nights has never been better and waking up to a full roast dinner yesterday was the icing on the cake..fantastic

knowing the sun is out, some of the best riding is to be had and having to cycle in the fecking dark...again.

I'll correct that for us 'days folk. - knowing the sun is out, and you'll be stuck in the office all day before you can ride home. Can see the advantages of commuting/riding out of hours - the roads to yourself.

The only problem with night riding is that there are lots of (not-so-)little furry critters about running across the road. I like getting a close up view of wildlife as much as the next person however I'd much prefer to do it when I'm NOT travelling at warp 9 while taking the crazy mans line to dodge all the potholes.

I used to have a 12hr (days and night) shift job working in a frozen food factory. During the pea season I also did an 18hr turn-round shift. 18hr's on 18hr's off then back to the 12hr's. I biked in at 5:30 in and 6:15 home. I enjoyed the night rides for the quiet runs, though technically they were morning rides.
I never had a problem falling asleep and was ready for my dinner when I got in, even at 6:30am. But then again it was over 30 years ago and I was late teens early 20's and this was my summer job whilst I was a student. Great shifts to be to pay off overdraft and save up for next year (no time to spend anything ).

The easiest way to deal with shifts is to turn you day into a normal day i.e if you are on 2-10 then 2pm becomes your 8am ( or whatever normal start time should be) . when i was doing 9pm to 9am on the trafford centre I was getting up at 6pm for the travel into work but had a bowl of cereal and made 6pm 6am for me.

no problems at all
