Tiagra Compact chain guard (or summat)

I've just fitted a brand new Tiagra compact double chainset - no problems with it, everything works superbly

Only thing is, there is this really pug-ugly clear plastic guard thing bolted to the outer ring. I can't see what function it's supposed to offer, other than perhaps to help prevent the chain unshipping outwards if the FD is not adjusted properly.

Can I take it off and throw it in the bin/spares box, or will this result in the end of the world as we know it (or something even more horrible).

Just take off if you don't want.

I've never understood, apart from aesthetics, the point in taking these off. It never hurts to keep them on, just in case.
