At that price second hand is going to be your best/ only way to go- anything you pick up new in that price bracket will probably be heavy, badly finished and the components made of cheese.
What would you call longer rides? You may favour a road bike if you are looking to push your distance up- you can get quite a few road bikes which'll happily take 700x 28 tyres which'll happily skip (carefully) along a canal path.

The subway seems to get good reviews. I've got 2 Carreras, an ageing mountain bike which has had a multitude of abuse thrown at it and lasted without a single failure over the many years, I've only ever had to change service items due to wear. I was so impressed that I recently bought a carrera tdf road bike, which also appears to be similarly robust. I don't think they are top end products, but in terms of toughness and reliability I've never had any complaints whatsoever. Mine just seem to go on and on. For the price, they are hard to beat.

Chris, at that price used would be your best option. The problem is you need to know what you are buying so go and look at it if you can. The good news is that some buy a bike on a whim and get disinterested and sell it. If you can get one like that youre on a winner! Find out what size you need and look acordingly. MTB's are more plentiful but there should also be a fair few hybrids out there. Try preloved and gumtree. Good luck.

Hi any suggestions on second hand bikes in that range? i can see myself trying to push the distance out quite alot, my fitness is a big part of my life and am always looking to push my body to the limit, having never really road biked though it's something very new to me, past bikes have always been mountain bikes.

Thanks for the reply thats what i'm looking for i understand i'm not going to get a top end bike for my price range but something that can hold itself together without breaking and decent quality.

Just a follow up, I was in my local halfords the other day and they had a brand new carrera subway for £120, I'll assume at that price it was ex display, but it looked unsoiled to me. Maybe worth a ring round some of your local branches to see what's under offer.

Another vote for the Subway here. Reasonably light and does the job.

Chris I am no expert but why not see if you have a community bike project in your area?

I have one near my place of work in Guildford. They had a number of bikes and helped me choose a bike that fitted me well and my final coice only cost me £65. You could always then save up and if you thik you want to spend more you can later down the line.
