I've just spend 2 hours playing silly games with my OH's road shoes due to heads of the cleat bolts which had rusted into something the consistency of cheese. In this case I cut the cleat away from the bolt & then made flats on the bolt heads before using an open head spanner. I did this because the cleats needed replacing anyway & it's a much lower risk cutting the cleat away than drilling out a hole when you can't securely hold the shoe steady.

So for those who use cleats a quick reminder to make sure that you remove, clean & re-install your cleats once a month or so. Also re-grease the threads of the bolts before putting them back on the shoe. Especially for those who ride through the winter & in all kinds of weather.

Well done. Hope your OH is suitably appreciative.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Always use coppergrease in holes on shoe soles and on my cleat bolts and never had a problem un-doing the bolts, even after neglecting them all winter.
