to break or not to brake

I know I'm hardly one to talk as my spelling is rarely perfect but do I find it incredible that someone can go through 10 years of our educational system and yet still go on a holiday 'brake' or fit a 'break' to their bike  annoys the hell out of me, but not as much as the use of the caps lock:angry:

sorry just felt like a rant this morning. I'm grumpy because its raining and all the little jobs I needed to do this morning have been put on hold

I'm dyslexic so my spelling is terrible, I run a spell checker on every post. I like to try and get the spelling and grammar right if I can but it's not that big a deal to me if other people don't. If I know what they mean who cares?

3 weeks in Northern Ireland - never been there for more than a weekend before. 10 days on the North coast - beach, surfing, some running, family bike rides and then 10 days in Mountains of Mourne. The back to Scotland and weekend at Wickerman festival before home and some intensive training for latter part of season - got to get some points on the board after a relatively* point-free season!

* OK - totally point free!

Inappropriate use of there and their gets me every time. I'm just an overeducated grumpy old man!

I'm also a dyslexic and run a spell checker an everything, but I also admit to being a bit of a pedant. However, spell checkers do not tell ewe weather the spelling is inappropriate only if the word exists so homophones cause a lot of problems!

For example :- My plan for Sunday is to change a tire, adjust the cleat on my write shoo, ride to the pub and sit out in the son with a pint of draft bitter, call into the bike shop on the way back and pick up some spare chain lynx, and have a hot bath to ease my mussel pane. Sounds grate!

Now if we could get intelligent context based spell checkers that would be something!

BTW how many people actually know the difference between practice and practise. Not just what but which? Just curious.

Not sure it's quite so simple as not knowing. I mean, I know the difference between 'brake' and 'break', and 'their' and 'their', but even so I'll still type the wrong one periodically. Sometimes the fingers take over and type what they want to! I do use spell check but that won't catch such things.

Just this morning, I typed 'Liverstrong' instead of 'Livestrong'! The fingers wanted to type 'liver' for some reason!!

Practice/practise is a noun/verb thing and there are a few differences like that. The one that gets me is effect and affect. In the context of a forum, I don't think it really matters but you'd want to check a job application letter!

My biggest bug bear is the people on here that pull you up on it when your trying to make a point in a discussion and its clear what that point is. Just focusing on the mistake and not on the point is worse than not being able to spell IMO :biggrin:

Over-educated? In this country that's primary school stuff! ;0)

My sister had a boyfriend who used to correct your every grammatical or pronunciational error. Did that make him look intelligent? Nope, just made him look like an ar**! 'Nuff said.

I broke my brake but couldn't get the break in the brake fixed as I am broke.

And another thing ... a correct sentance with five ands in a row!

A sign writer painted a pub sign for the FrogandToad. The lanlord told him he had missed the spaces between Frog and and and and and Toad.
