When I was at school we used to use the term gimlet, there was a specific dictionary we were all expected to have which defined gimlet as

gimlet; a boring tool.

I used to use the phrase "little tyke" until a young female colleague took great offence. A few hours later, when she was talking to me again, I realised that she had never heard the word "tyke" and thought I had called her a "dyke".

Although why she thought it so bad to be compared to an embankment / causeway / ditch (depending on geographical background), I have no idea!
