Sorry it was not a competition. It was a Concert.Oh and what a Concert. It was awesome, this was my first.
The band was City of Bradford Brass Band. The playing was out of this world. So much better than on telly. The audience were mainly mature ladeese and gentallmen. We even got an encore. The only sound you heard from the audience was either clapping or joining in on shouts of Ole,Arriba,Arriba and any other whooping sounds. The evening was over far too quickly. What a night.

Blowing your own trumpet again, eh!

Glad you enjoyed the evening, Postie! Now you know your niche.

Being a southerner, brass bands aren't part of our 'culture', although I liked the music to Alan Titchmarsh's 'Groundforce.' Oh, and the film with Pete Postlethwaite about brass bands.

You took your time to discover the joy of brass bands.

Competitions are day long events with the British Championship lasting two days.

If you want to sample more then one band in one event then the Saddleworth & District Whit Friday Brass Band competition where over a hundred bands ranging from youth bands through to the 'big hitters' compete at a range of venues. Each band plays one piece on the march and one piece on a rostrum. There's more music than you can shake a stick at. Next year's is on 29th May.

Here's some forthcoming ones all of them at Morley Town Hall.

Cory Band (11/04/2015)
The Cory Band's numerous CD recordings and...
Fairey Band (21/02/2015)
Since its early days, the Fairey Band...
Flowers Band (28/03/2015)
The Flowers Band records regularly for Radio...
Foden’s Band (25/04/2015)
Foden's Band made history in 2014 by...
Grimethorpe Colliery Band (08/11/2014)

I'll be at some of them whooping and hollering from the back during the quiet bits.

Ill see your RMT band and I'll raise you one Portsmouth Sinfonia

If they hadn't been so noisy you'd have heard me whooping and hollering at the back.

i really like the idea behind the Portsmouth Symphonia - it's for people who love music and would love to actually play real music but haven't been blessed with much talent. The idea is that you do your best and play for the joy of it. Apparently if you get to be any good you have to leave or change instrument - after all there are plenty of bands for people who are reasonably good - but they don't want people who just mess around - but give the opportunity to people whose best just isn't very good.

That's fine - but do they really have to record themselves AND publish (without a Government Health Warning)?
