Just a quick one... I'm after a basic bike tool fit for general servicing and repairs. Can anyone recommend a basic kit that covers most of the bases avoiding tools i won't ever use?

cheers andy

Have a look at this, one of the authors goes by the name of Mickle on here. For bike-specific tools (as opposed to spanners etc), I have bought both Park Tool and Ice Toolz (LIFU).

With PT I have found that the more expensive tools are better value than the cheaper ones: the chain whip and pedal spanner are long and sturdy with nice handles, whereas the chainring bolt holder and chain wear gauge are just pressed steel.

IT are definitely at the budget end: poorly finished and a bit rough, the handle of the crank puller is a sloppy fit on the extractor (although the extractor itself is reasonable) and the adjustable bottom bracket wrench (for old style cups) is stiff and the ends of the pins look like they've been cut with a butter knife.
