Ok I'm going to buy some tools to maintain my bike as much myself as possible, i'll only need specialist tools as I have a decent amount of kit at work I could borrow.
On my list I'm thinking,
Cassette socket
Chain whip
Bottom bracket spanner......anything else?

Is there any basic kits out there you could recommend?
Thanks

Get a decent multi-tool and also worth having a chain breaker/joiner. Pedal spanner is useful. Also a few brushes for cleaning.

Pedal spanner if your pedals use them (some don't for example Look Keo tighten on with a hex key), cone spanners for adjusting your hubs (unless your hubs have a propiety system like Mavic hubs), cable cutters, torque wrench, socket bits, chain tool, chain wear measurement device of some sort.

I am basically listing the shoot strewn across my living room floor atm, lol!

Spoke tightening key/tool.

I wouldn't bother with a multi-tool except for taking out on a ride. They are too small for using all the time. Better off with bigger versions of the same thing in the workshop.

what's in my box.... four allen keys: tiny, mediumish and medium and a long one for the crankbolts. A cable cutter, a mole grip, a flat and cross head screwdriver. Casette tool, chain whip, BB tool, crank extractor and link splitter.

you don't really need a torque wrench as they're over priced and unnecessary. Chain wear guage? sod it.... you'll know when your chain is worn.

edit... i do have a spoke key but can't remember the last time i used it.

another edit.... 10mm spanner and a couple of bearing spanners

and another edit... in the saddle bag i have a press on puncture kit and the four allen keys.

Lots of allen keys and spanners.
I've got several of the same size, for keeping in the bike bag on the move, for the tool box at home, least you take one out of the bike bag, forget about it, then you need it while out and don't have it.

Ill probably get shot for suggesting this...but when I started I got the halfords essential took kit for around £20. Its not the best, but itll last a bit and youll soon find out which tools you use regularly and would like to upgrade, and then theres those which you rarely use and the cheap ones suffice. Ive upgraded allen keys, bought extra wrenches, cable cutter and socket sets, but I think thats all.

Reckon you'll survive. Most complaints on here are about the Halfords staff on the end of the tools.

Some not in the picture include a rubber mallet, digital pressure gauge, torx keys all on a socket and ratchet system, folding torx and allen key set and a pocket size chainbreaker which live in my seat pack or hydration pack.

Depending on your bottom bracket, I would suggest a separate socket type, coupled with a drive bar and square ratchet driver. The fatspanner C type on the top row in my pic can slip on a stubborn BB. The socket type just to the left of the T handle hex driver uses a half inch drive, but snugs over all the teeth in the BB cups. Much more leverage and less likelihood of breakage. Similalry, if you can find a long-handled pedal spanner buy it. The short ones can be a 'mare on stuck pedals. All my pedals use an 8mm hex key, and go on with coppaslip and hand-torque only.

Superstar components sell quality tools for ridiculous money.
