I did wonder if I overdid the booze references but it is an essential part of my holiday! Nice to meet a kindred spirit.
The food was Germanic in the north and more Italian in the south for obvious reasons. The traditional dishes were fairly heavy - dumplings, pork, sausages - not unappetising but not ideal in the height of summer. The quality of locally produced wine was very variable but generally palatable and apparently on the up.
