I am a fairly new returner to cycling looking to spend about £1000 on a touring bike. I currently ride an old Dawes Durango which I find quite heavy going. Last summer I rode from Bangkok to Chiang Mai on a Trek 7.2, a good rental bike but had seen better days. This summer I am contemplating a ride down the west coast of France to the Spanish border, perhaps further depending how I feel. Any advice on bikes and or routes and stopping points would be greatly appreciated.

The above link was something I looked at a few months ago. I have since decided that i'm too old and unfit for now, so will revert back next year when I get some miles under my belt. I have however always liked Kona as I had a MTB LavaDome 17-years ago. I and a mate went on tour with MTB's which we fitted racks and panniers and slick tyres and did Provence. Hard going on an MTB but great fun, and when I decided to take cycling back up recently Kona was the first place I looked.

Good luck

Edinburgh Bike Co-op have this on sale at the moment - I use it as my commuter but haven't used it for touring (so far) so couldn't advise on longer rides.
