just to add to the thread, the only time I've had issues are the two instances where I have dealt via 'big' companies. I think the problem is that, by the time all the hands have been in the pot, the money paid to the tradesperson is extremely low. This seems to result in corner cutting to various degrees.

The local window cleaner left his van outside our house last weekend and it was vandalised at 2 o'clock Monday morning. So we called the police and told them what we could. When the bloke came to retrieve his van, he knocked on the door to say thanks for calling the police. Then on Wednesday he turned up and did our windows for us, all for free. He did a good job, too.

I urge people to think of Clarkson's wise words when you are cursing the white van man who insists on getting right up your arse on the motorway: "remember - someone, somewhere, is getting a job done slightly quicker than they would be if he was waiting patiently in the left hand lane."

I wanted to drain, flush and refill the central heating system before winter. I was switching off the boiler prior to tying up the ballcock in the attic, and looked at the quality of the installation. Lovely neat labels on all the cables, beautifully-bent pipes, all neatly lined up, and thought to myself "I bet this guy used an anti-corrosion agent".

When I opened up the drainvalve downstairs, instead of a foul brown sludge, a lovely trickle of clear water came out. He had used an anti-corrosion agent, bless him.

So, unknown heating engineer, here's a cup of tea and a home-made biscuit...
