One thing I dont like about cycle lanes on a shared footpath, is the way you are just dumped back onto the road at the most dangerous places like Traffic Lights and Roundabouts, and where the roadsde lanes suddently end for no apparent reason.

As far as I can figure out, on-pavement paths do end suddenly for a reason: the same reason that on-road bike lanes disappear - because that's exactly where the road layout becomes tricky or complicated, and the council/highway authority can't be arsed solving the problem.

Cheaper and easier to plonk a sign in the middle of the path a few yards downhill of the busiest roundabout for miles and draw a bendy line across the pavement to point you off a nice high kerb just where every driver puts the foot down to accelerate away from the lights/roundabout. Can't help feeling those cooncil workies have a sense of humour.
