Just got an e-mail from TfL regarding their cycling website and changes made, etc. All well and good.

More disturbing was how it was signed off.

I feel like I'm a bit player in a re-make of 1984. Member of the anti-s*x league naturally. ;)

There's something wrong with the grammar of that title, too.

It was (jokingly) suggested at my local FE college that the sociology, psychology and related-things section should be called the Department of Social Engineering.

I quite like the way they are doing this though - it's not terribly Orwellian at all.

The cycle superhighways are just a way of pointing out to drivers that loads of cyclists use the route, they are not cycle lanes and there are no special laws for them or cameras to catch you out, mainly because you can drive in them and park in them when restrictions allow. They are NOT cycle lanes. (If only cyclists and drivers would see this though, they need to educate better)

And the bike hire thing will introduce to the roads a load of cyclists to get in the way of speeding cabs and the like, so they will have to give in to a critical mass in the end.

Much better form of social engineering than that normally undertaken by government with massively complex systems involving loads of laws and surveillance...

You haven't heard about phase two then?

Once everyone's using the bikes they'll be adding cameras to them, and using the cyclists as a roving surveillance network.

I think I'm joking.

We'll have to wait for the next Labour government for that...
