Hi all,

I may eventually get this resprayed but for the time being i'm going to build it up and try and patch up the paintwork.

What is the best process of getting this ready for some paint? What should I apply before the paint?

Scrape off all lose paint with a screwdriver and wire brush. Use emery cloth to take off any remaining rust. I usually patch with hammerite paint. Spray wd40 down all tubes and tube holes. Check the bottom bracket for water, and the chainstay for internal corrosion close to bb shell. Drill a bb drain hole if you want.

Advice very good so far. Definitely clean it as much as you can and then Jenolite or Kurust or similar rust converter. I find red oxide primer works well as a base coat. The downside is the drying time.

The important thing at this time of year is to try and work somewhere warm as damp is your enemy. If you can't do that, place an electric heater beside the bit you are working on for a while before painting or else heat it with a blowtorch.
