Thanks for reminding me @PK99! My mother had no great interest in cooking but she did make a mean trifle every once in a blue moon. I can't remember the details too well but I think it was based on those spongy finger things, and featured custard, and fair bit of sherry. The other ingredients have got lost in the mists of time but I'm pretty sure some red jelly was involved.
