Aren't the Ramblers Association a force to be reckoned with? Janet Street-Porter was their President at one point I seem to recall. A right bunch of countryside guerillas.

Particularly the off-shoot or sleeper cells. Here in West Yorks there is a burgeoning issue with ROW problems. The sort of direct action quoted above can become quite intense. Here is a quote from the Huddersfield Examiner:

"Margaret Cook prepared and helped serve meat and potato pie, mushy peas, home-made cakes and teas for a group of Healthy Life Ramblers at Upper Slaithwaite Church on Saturday. Proceeds were for church funds. "

not to get you down but this sort of thing can take a while, especially if the landowner will not back down.

If they will not it will end up in court with all the time that involves, and then the enforcement action, and then more enforcement action if the landowner is particularly pigheaded. I have known cases take years to get a successful conclusion.

But there is not much as tenacious as a p****d rights of way officer, because they usually do the job because they believe in the right of people to use footpaths and the like
