tube keep blowing

i am fed up with regular changing of inner tubes. And running out
i will explain. tube inserted night before work, still up at 0600, commute to work. check at 0900 still ok. Come 1700 hr tube has a rip approx 2 sometime 3 inch long ON THE INSIDE. i commute 3.5 m half of which is off road, is this a factor? as the bike is new dec 2010.The rim tape i took off applied duck tape then re applied rim tape. Not just rear wheel, front also , which i have replaced with another wheel/tyre i had lying around. Run off road tyres at 4 bar.
Any one had similar experience? now using the car is an option, only a last resort.

It could be that the inner tube has been pinched between the rim and the tyre beading when the tyre has been replaced, causing a weakness, and then a split.

I had this happen to me three times a row when I changed tyres at the weekend, but the split flattened the tyre almost straight away. Both needed patching on the inside section of the tube, which makes me think it might be a similar problem.

Rim tape old and stiff ? Had a smilar problem so replaced the rim tape and guess what? No Voldermorts

Strange getting a rim a few inches long on the inside, was the tyre cut as well ?

Is this a road bike or mountain bike ?

thanks , a few responses; The tyre stayed inflated for 12+ hrs .JB the bike was brand new dec 2010, guess rim tape has a longer life than 5 mths. Tyre in tact no marks to be seen, this has happened maybe 6 ?7 times ive lost count + interest in counting tbh. CS _ this is a spesh hardrock mtb.I will try new rim tape.
Can't think of anything else.

I had a weird one once - I was running a mobile workshop one day when a guy brought a bike to me with a flat, I took it all apart, checked the inside of the tyre, put in a new tube, pumped it up and put it back together. Left the bike to one side and after a few minutes the tube blew. I repeated the operation three times! each time I checked the tyre and the rim thoroughly. The tyre wasn't blowing off the rim but it was leaving an enormous ragged hole in the tube. I was pulling my hair out - and running out of tubes. I put the last one in, pumped it up and the damn thing went off again when it was still in the stand - 'luckily' the tyre blew off right next to my arm leaving an almighty weal - so I was able to locate the cause of the trouble. There was a tiny tiny hole in the tyre - about 2mm long half way down the sidewall. The tube was holding its shape for a few minutes but as it sat there under pressure the inner slowly 'crawled' through the hole and popped.

There can only be three things causing your flats. The tyre has a sharp in it, the tyre has a hole in it or the tyre is blowing off the rim.

thanks mickle sounds similar tho mine tend to stay inflated while i am at work and flat as a pancake when i leave for home . Will check and double check tyres.
