Turbo every time, the position and seat on exercise bikes is generally crap and in no way resembles your position on your bike.

That's certainly true of my cheapish (£125) gym bike!

The saddle was unusable so I replaced it with one from my spares box.

I couldn't get the saddle anywhere near high enough so I raised it by about 5 inches using 2 lengths of thick timber.

I found that I was then leaning forwards too much so I put some more timber under the front of the bike to raise it to a more sensible height.

After all of that, it is quite usable but I still don't like the short BMX-style cranks and flat pedals. I would rather have longer cranks and SPD pedals. Like the ones on my road bike in fact ...

Have been thinking the same thing. What would people recommend as a cheap starter model - I'm not training for anything, just don't want to lose my fitness when the weather gets bad and I'm too wimpy to go outside!
Also, some advice on what not to waste my money on would be useful.
Thanks
