Tyre liners

I did not know these existed until a colleague of mine who road races informed me last night (when he saw I had acquired a puncture).

Does anyone use them? Are they any good? Any recommendations?

I used them in the past, they did stop punctures. I can't remember why I stopped using them, idleness no doubt, these days I prefer slime innertubes.
All these things add weight so they're not much good if you're a competitive type, but for a lazy old troll like myself who just likes bimbling around d the lanes they are fantastic.

Road racers tend to have lightweight fast tyres easily prone to punctures. Race tyres and tyre liners is a bit of a contradiction. Better to just have more robust but slower tyres if you are not racing. If racing save the lightweight race tyres for races,

I had a puncture spree and tried them. First I used were big, thick, heavy affairs from Halfords (?). And you knew they were there. Bike felt lethargic and heavy. With no feel in the tyres.

I’ve now had Kevlar reinforced (?) lightweight jobbies in for more than a year. Coupled with well rated Schwalbe puncture protection tyres I’ve done more than ok 😉 [Im not gonna say it !!] so far.

AND - because I spent a few £££ second time round; I can’t tell the liners are in there. And bike feels exactly as normal.

Good luck !

I have, but I wouldn't bother. I've tried the heavy PU type ones in the past and they were 'heavy' and killed the feel of the tyre. Totally dead. They also caused a bit of tube rub which lead to punctures over time.

Roll on some years, and I spotted some much more modern ones in Decathlon, nice and thin. I was commuting on the canal at the time and due to the time of the year, picking up a thorn at least twice a week. Fitted them and they did affect performance a little, but otherwise worked.

Genius I thought, until..... Some months later I started to pick up the odd puncture, no trace at first, but eventually traced them to the ridge line where the puncture tape was. The tape had slowly worn the tube at the sides of the tread area just enough to cause little micro holes.

I won't bother again. For commuting I just use puncture resistant tyres, slow, but I'll maybe get a couple of punctures a year, usually large thorns.

I had them on my road bike..........a small stick went through the side wall
sometimes you win............

Yeah - I have marathons and slime tubes

but one day I found a 3 inch screw through the side wall - well up from the road
no idea how it got there but no liner was going to stop it

It was rather like a photo I saw of a Tiger tank that had been hit by a shell from a battleship on D-Day

protection can only go so far!!

I've been using them for a couple of years now. It's really important to install them correctly or they will cause a puncture. I use cornstarch to lubricate them and that makes a huge difference to their performance
I use them on our commuters with mostly Marathon tyres and neither of us get punctures. Even her Brompton which carries massive loads doesn't get them

thanks all for the info - I had not heard of these but I might just look for some after this

walking home is never my favourite part of cycling!

My thoughts exactly! As I had to do just this last night after work in the freezing cold etc. And whilst I don't live very far from work, I was bloody cold when I got home 🥶

Thanks for all the info, worth investigating and potentially using.
