I've just picked up an old Peugeot with tyre size 28 X 1 ⅜ X 1 and someone has told me that 700 tyres would fit this.

Is this correct? Can anyone recommend a suitable tyre size that would fit?

If it's an old Peugeot racer it will probably take 700c X 23 or 700c X 25.

You need to a little careful as manufacturers sizes come up slightly different even for the same size. You should be okay with 25 but you might be able to go up to 28 but you need to watch frame clearance.
What Peugeot model are we talking about?

This is a 700c wheel. Sizing them in Imperial can get a little confusing.

Your existing tyres probably have several sizes using different standards marked on them. Look to see if it says 700 x XXc or 622 x XXmm written on them.
