Tyres

Now I know this is VERY basic but I have a problem blowing up my tyres!
Until now I have always had the same type as on cars but now it is a very thin type - sorry I don't know what they are called.
Anyway I have unscrewed the inner part ensured it was free then attached to my car pump with adapter. It goes up, to a fashion, but won't go above 40psi.
Any thoughts?

Screw on to the Presta valve, apply your car pump.. then away you go...
