Mr6 and I have the same week off in august and are looking for some inspiration.
Ideally within 3 hours drive of Carlisle, and with something to do or visit nearby suited to girls of 10, 13 and 15, but not exclusively "girly" they love the rail museum after all.
Hit me;!

What about Beadnell in Northumbria - or somewhere nearby - Seahouses, Bamburgh, etc?
Some of the best beaches in the world on the doorstep and lots of castles to explore in the area. Bamburgh Castle is amazing (and is also home to an interesting museum about the Industrial Revolution in Northumberland), Alnwick Castle was used for the Harry Potter films and the gardens there are home to the worlds biggest treehouse. Dunstanburgh Castle is an evocative ruin that can only be reached on foot after a walk along the coast and you have the Northumbria Coastal path and loads of cycle routes on your doorstep (including the Coast and Castles Route, parts of NCN R1)

Spooky coincidence, I've just been looking at Durham on airbnb and found a nice let in corbridge.
We've been meaning to go to alnwick castle for ages.

Corbridge is good for the Roman Forts on Hadrians Wall but you have to drive 20 minutes east to the A1 and then minimum 45 minutes north to get to Banburgh Sandra... be better based in Alnwick- some nice cafes and a cinema. Alnwick Castle and Banburgh are owned by the Percys so expensive to get in though they'll do a family ticket.

How about doing a tour?

Up to Glasgow for a day.

Over to Edinburgh the next day.

Then down to Northumberland for the rest of the time.

Whilst the remember, if you do go think about joining National Heritage. I couldn't be bothered but kicked myself as I would have saved a fortune on visits to castles etc. I think its national heritage, blooming memory....... Nurse !!

We had a cracking week in a holiday cottage in the borders a couple of years back. Just north or Berwick. Day trips to the seaside, Edinburgh and the Flying museum. Found a big country house with a splendid play area that was hosting a 'tattie olympics' which the kids competed in. Took the bikes and had the odd bimble.

Also the wigwams just south of Berwick earlier this year were pretty good!
