Ultegra set up with Tiagra??!!!

i'm pretty new to cycling and have a question. currently have tiagra on my bike and will be upgrading to ultegra. just managed to get a steal on ebay (ultegra 6700 front & rear derailleur for 40) i will be getting a chainset and casette in about a months time. in the time between...is it ok to use these with a tiagra chainset and 9 speed chain?

your help is much appreciated.

You'll need to get some 10 speed shifters when you get the 10 speed cassette.

The Ultegra is 10 speed, the tiagra 9 speed.
The front derailleur and chainset should work fine, but the 10 speed rear derailleur will not be compatible with the 9 speed cassette - so when you upgrade you will need to look at a 10 speed cassette.

Also, you will need a 10 speed rear shifter - not sure if you can get them in tiagra but if you can, I think chain reaction cycles are selling them cheapish

It would probably be wise to wait a month and make the change all at once. Or alternatively, do not wait a month, make the change all at once and do it all now.

The front deraileur will be compatable now as long as you have bought the same size front mech as the Tiagra, i.e a triple, double or compact. These will work with you front shifter.

The rear though, as has been said, will not be compatable as the Tiagra is 9 speed, the indexing will be wrong. You will need to but a 10 speed cassete, chain and new rear shifter in order to use it.
Chain about £20
Cassette about £50
rear shifter about a ton im guessing.

Thanks for the response guys. I'm about to buy a cassette and chainset this week (wife doesn't know yet). I'm going to get the shifters in a few weeks time and then change them all at once apart from the front derailleur which I'm about to do once this weather sorts itself out.

If the tiagra is in decent condition, you could limit the losses by selling it - the shifters will still sell for a fair bit.

Thats a good option imo. Tiagra cassettes last forever in my experience.

It'll probably work out cheaper to buy a complete Ultegra groupset and then sell the bits you don't need. Shimano shifters when bought separately are stupidly expensive.

I went from Tiagra to Ultegra SL on one bike for a while. I retained the nine-speed cassette and Tiagra shifters but had ultegra rear and front derailleurs and crankset (Ultegra SL stuff was very cheap from Chainreaction for a while when it was phased out).

Both derailleurs worked fine with this arrangement - the shifting differences between 9 and 10 speed with this setup seemed to be entirely down to the shifters, not the mechanics of the rear derailleur.

thanks for the advice. Just another quick one. Will I need to change the rear wheel Hun to fit a 10 speed cassette or wil this not be a problem.

Hi Jpb,

Just to echo John above, there will be no problems running the ultegra mech on a nine speed cassette. The indexing is all run from the shifter and is about how much cable each 'click' takes up. The mech just moves between the high and low limit screws so in theory would work on anything from a five speed casette through to a ten.

If you do want to upgrade the cassette to ten you will need to change the shifters too, but there should be no problems putting the cassette info your existing freebody. From memory the width is the same for 7,8,8 and 10 speed. But chain widths vary so you'll need to replace that too.
