Hi first post and as a newbie I’m sure they questions will seem dumb to some but please bear with me.
I have sirrus elite 2014 and the tyres have finally given up and need replacing.
I was going to put Schwab marathon 700x35 on to give a bit more comfort and ability on tracks and poor tarmac which I ride on.
Also I am considering altering the chainring to give a little more speed as it it fairly flat where I live.
Are both or either of these suggestion sensible or achievable - be kind!!

Chainring wise I wouldn't unless its worn out and needs replacement. You really won't go faster, unless,you're already spinning over 100rpm in top gear on the flat roads.

Tyres,

though Schwalbe Marathon plus are a solid commuter tyre with a decent puncture protection strip. They are very heavy tyre and really numb the ride feel. My favourite is Schwalbe G One Allround either in 35mm or 40mm. To give good puncture protection add Orange endurance sealant to the inner tube via removal of the valve core. I add 75-85 mil per inner tube.

I usually run full tubeless but I always put sealant inside innertubes when using them

Got the same hybrid myself.
The gear 48_11 will get you to 28 mph @ 80 rpm so no point in changing.
What i did find was the factory wheelset were heavy,swapped them for shimano and now a different bike.

I've had Marathon + and they have done what was promised- puncture free riding and long life, but at the cost of comfort, responsiveness and weight. They really take all the joy out of cycling for me. That may be a price worth paying for you.
 
Marathon+ are bombproof and you can almost leave the p*nature kit behind, but yes they're heavy.

I guess it depends how heavy your original tyres were.

I've used Marathon plus on my old commuter/ town bike for ten years, and I agree with all the above, there are much better choices if it's comfort, grip and feel you're after. They're certainly solid, I've never had a puncture on M+ in all that time, but they feel solid, and Schwalbe make some far better tyres for comfort and grip whilst not really compromising protection all that much.

I agree with the comments about Marathon +, they were my commuting choice for years . I think the OP is planning to use the standard Marathon not the plus , they are lighter and give a more forgiving ride.

Change cranks only if worn. If you're planning to go 1x chainset for weight saving you should consider gear spacing. You still can get decent range with 11-36 cassette and 44-48t chainring but on 9 sp. cassette gear spacing may prove too wide. I'm not complaining on mine but I'm ok with wide cadence range.

And weight saving won't be huge 50-200grams maybe?

I can confirm that 35c marathons non plus are not heavier than 38c kenda something I had on previous bike. No comfort difference either. Not too loud on Turbo trainer. Can't speak for puncture protection after only 100miles though.

I could take tyres off and weigh them if there is any interest.
