Helllo this seems like a good as place as any to ask this.
I have recently gone down the valve amp route for my hifi. However hailing from the 60s it obviously have a cd player output. I am not sure whether or not to plug it into the aux output or the tape output. Any ideas?

It should be ok in the tape output. As far as I know it's only record decks that require a special loud input or a preamp.
I've not long bought a valve amp for my hi fi. I can't hear much difference in the sound, but it doesn't half look good!

Thanks. I realy noticed a big diffirence in the sound rhythm theif. Lovely warm sound and none of that sharp almost painful treble my transister amp had.

I would say AUX, save the tape i/o for a cassette deck - people still make tapes don't they?

Either of them but you might need the tape ones for when you buy that ex studio 30 ips EMI reel to reel tape recorder!

The only input that's really specialised on any amp (valve or semiconductor) is the one for vinyl disc cartridges, (often marked phono) which has equalisation for a standard magnetic cartridge and RIAA recording curve.

As a teenager - I got my dad's old reel to reel from the garage - had some reels with loads of old tunes on it - it was great.

All my music is now ripped CD's on the PC, fed through media center to the 5.1 amp setup. But I really miss having a record deck - my amp doesn't even have a phono input.

You can also use the tape loop to send signal out to another room or any other recording device.

CD and valve amps are a often wise combination as the warmth of the valves can take the edge off CD. A lot of the harshness you hear is coming from the CD player, not the amp.

I really like the sound of valves and the highly efficient speakers often used with them. I like relaxed, open sound you get as opposed to the pile-driver solidity of powerful transistors.

You can buy one on eBay for about £30.

Valves do sound better.
I still have an old Telefunken portable studio deck like this one.

It needs a bit of a service though as the reel brakes stick a bit.
