Vanern: has anyone cycled there?

If you know what's good for you ...
Hi

Anyone? I'm cycling to Norway and have to decide how best to get to Oslo. I really fancy going from Uddevalla to Grums, then up to Arjang and onto Oslo from there. The route that goes straight north from Gothenburg via Halden doesn't seem the most interesting and I reckon the day extra I'd need to go via Vanern is worth it. But when I look at the route in ridwithgps (here), it tells me that I'd have 3500 metres climbing to do on one of my stages. Really? I find it difficult to believe. The area seems mostly flat to me (undulating but not hilly). Can anyone give me information on this? I really don't think I can do 3500 metres climbing over a 100-mile distance on a fully-loaded touring bike. Are these ridewithgps figures reliable?

Do you know if the route incorporates many tunnels? My Bryton mapping software tends to calculate the height gain by going over the top of mountains when the road actually runs through them. If you have a look on your route with google street view in any particularly high gradient areas you will see.

Edit: just had a look at your link, can't see any tunnels but the elevation chart looks very spikey, my guess is the software isn't very accurate in its smoothing, so route undulating but not to the extent of 3000+ M

not really very hilly - maybe its hilly Vanern to Halding.

The coast road is pleasant and maybe not that interesting (is anywhere in the low parts of Scandinavia ?) but Id rate it more than the trip to Vanern

Thanks for your input guys. I've tried loading the same route in brytonsport and mapmyride. Brytonsport I really couldn't get on with (feels too clunky) so I didn't join that site. However, mapmyride gave a completely different result from the exact same route, uploaded from ridewithgps: 166.2 kms with 833 metres climbing! Ahem - slight diference there! This figure seems more believable to me. I mean, 3500 metres climbing is a hard day on the tour de France!
Cheers once again!

'Unfortunately' I have a Bryton Rider so no choice but to use the website, it is clunky but then on the otherhand it is getting better as they develop it and sell more devices, (and as the price rises) so glad to 'get in' early.

One of the classic sportives in Scandinavia was/is the Vanern Circuit. It is regarded as a hard sportive. It was also a major one day event in the racing calendar many decades ago too.

From what I can see on my software, the hills is not that steep. They would not register on a Scottish ride, btw. I would not loose any sleep over it.

The Arjang to Oslo, also called The Bacon Trail, is probably far more heavy than this one. OK, I have just seen it from a car on a bacon run, but I did not fancy riding it.
