VDO A8 has died

Has anyone else experienced this? I've been riding with it on the bike in the rain recently and it was OK. I got home from work Friday night to find a blank screen and the little placcy bit with 'A8' on it, still there when I started my journey, missing from between the buttons. Would this missing trim part have been enough to let water in and kill it? I haven't had a chance to take the battery out and put it back in again but will do probably tonight.
The part that really jarred me off was that I thought I'd finally cracked the 38 minute work-to-home barrier and couldn't check 'cos of the dead A8!!

I would expect the placcy bit to be a sticker & not part of the waterproofness. At least I hope so otherwise my A8 might suffer the same fate!
