Under the tarpaulin over a compost heap, I disturbed 3 couleuvre d'esculape. The largest was around 2m in length I reckon, and about 2" in girth. The one pictured was the 2nd biggest. Completely harmless apparently but still something you expect to see in the zoo and not your garden!

Dont think they're Grass Snakes, not adders..possibly slow worms, (which are legless lizards, not snakes)

Unless they're more exotic escapees...

Must admit, I got it identified before I got any closer! The garden is full of lizards and small snakes and I'm used to them... but these fellas are in a different league. I don't mind admitting that I was just a tad unsure!!
