Here's a debate I'm interested in - what's ethical to post on YT? What sort of situations are you fine with putting up, and what do you think should be left off?

For example, AndyB0001's head on crash on the roundabout, his own crash, his own blood, no problem.

I recently came across the following incidents and didn't think I should post them.
* a middle aged lady cyclist who crashed on a (not very) dropped kerb as she tried to move out of the way of a bus behind her. I don't think it was the bus driver's fault, btw., and suspect she just felt pressure of traffic.
* a drunk lady in catford, who'd fell over lying in the road. Actually, with this one I wanted to post the impatient tosser of a driver who didn't want to wait until we got her up before edging past.
* the aftermath of a major head on collision with cut open vehicles.

There are certain things I won't post. Things like the crashes with people clearly injured and lying on the floor.

Interesting question, fortunately not a situation I have found myself in yet.

If I were to post anything like that I would probably blur any faces and keep it private for a while to allow me to think whether it should be made public.

From a different view point, showing the aftermath of accidents is a good way of showing the consequences of poor/bad driving/cycling.

I had a very minor incident a while ago where the driver involved was a Premiership footballer.

Would you videographers (is that what we're calling you now?!) post a video if the driver was a celebrity, given the potential for the media to get hold of it and the story to get out-of-hand?

Not being into celebrity culture and premiership football I would not know one if they crashed into me .

Make a bit of money...sell it to the News of the World! Oh, wait....hang on...

I think all incidents posted tell a story, and are good learning curves for drivers and cyclists alike. If the identities are hidden (even the Premiership footballer...you going to tell us who it is? ) then I see no problem with posting.

if the identities of the users are protected i don't see a major issue, unless of course its something like injured children or somebody who has passed beyond this life.

i also wouldn't know a premiership footballer if i fell over him.

If someone else was injured and identifiable from their face I'd never post it online. If someone had done something really stupid and fallen off their bike however it'd be up on Youtube before the day was out

Unlikely

He would be more likely to fall over you and roll around on the floor in mock agony shouting "penalty!"

First & second possibly.
Third, never. I'd also try & make certain that the camera was removed from view. If that wasn't possible, block the lens with the hand.

While working in a care home I was told this story by an elderly resident. She had fallen over in the street and broken her hip a crowd gathered to fuss over her when a man got out of his bentley organised everyone to give her a bit of dignity and called an ambulance. the next day he turned up at her hospital bed with the largest bunch of flowers she had ever seen. She hadn't realised who the man was originally as she had been in such pain but recognised him when he bought the flowers. I don't want to breach her confidentiality by naming the premiership and england footballer but she was genuinely touched that a stranger had taken the trouble to bring her flowers and has been a big fan of his ever since.

I use this as a golden rule (its the same one I apply to rubber necking, something else I try to avoid)

If it were you, what would you want to see.

If you were lying on the floor in pain and with injuries, would you want people standing about filming you, so that they can dump it on utoob to improve their sub's or hits or likes...or whatever?

Alternatively

If you were laying on the floor in pain and with injuries would you want people to film and gather important evidence, that would be sent to you personally for your own use?

So... people watching...or people helping....I know which I'd rather see, if it were me on the floor

Filming doesn't default to utoob

The problem is if it were you lying on the floor with cameras pointing in your direction how would you know what they were going to do with the images? Not all will be there to help.

Drawing on two seperate events here.
On top of a multi-story carpark, taking photo's from an elevated position. I had taken a picture of the car & the driver getting into it minutes before he ran a red light, hit a pedestrian on the crossing & failed to stop. By the time I got to ground level, police & ambulance were there. My walking into the scene with the camera held in my hand wasn't welcome, by anyone there. Until I was able to explain that I had at least one picture of the vehicle involved, with possibly a clear shot of the number plate.

Travelling into town & met by the sight of a lorry, stationary, in the centre of the road. Part of a body lying in the road behind the lorry, clearly visible. Shortly afterwards the police closed that road & a number of roads around it. What didn't stop however were the people who just wanted to get the scene on their mobile phones, just so they could pass it on, not as evidence. At one stage the sheer number, rushing to get there blocked a dual carrigeway bringing traffic to a standstill.
