VISTA-WIN.7 = UPGRADE

In other words for those who didn't understand & need a translation...

I've got Vista and I'd like to use Win. 7 yet I understand I can get it as an Upgrade...

Can anybody advise me further sil'vous'plait

If you're PC is new and qualifies for a free upgrade, you can do it two ways at least...
We just got an Acer laptop...logged onto Acers website and requested it through there...£13 postage iirc.
When we were talking to PC world about another issue, he said...no, you should have done it through our website.

Either way...maybe others too

Agree with that, reading some of the posts on the MicroMart forum, a few people are having problems when trying to upgrade, especially if they are using Vista home Basic.

Just upgraded Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate...simples, but took a while.
I had to uninstall my video drivers, AV and Firewall because I was asked too, then it was just a case of run the setup and wait...and wait...

Oh, you can only upgrade Vista xx edition to Win7 xx edition - Home Basic to Home Basic, Ultimate to Ultimate etc. Like for like.

but it's all shiny and new again now and after reinstalling AV, Firewall and video drivers, nothing seems amiss. Don't often like to give them credit, but Microsoft have done a good job on the upgrade routines.

Although, by going for an upgrade rather than a clean install, you are at risk of pulling across all the detritus which had built up on your old PC's system files.. Clean install will take much longer (because you also need to re-install all the program files) but it may work faster.

Then again, I'm a lazy bastid and went for the upgrade too.

Juh know I didnt qualify for an upgrade...(free) so am gonna have to buy it IF I want it...

Slghtly irritated...soldier on with Vista though - may get sick & tired of it...and just buy 7...

Just upgraded Vista to W7 premium. Instead of buying the disc I downloaded it from Microsoft's site then burnt to disc. It was a very easy install, no problems what so ever, took a couple of hours to upgrade the machine. Only had to re-install my virus protection. Am impressed with the results already, the laptop definitely fires up quicker and programs seem to run quicker then the old clunky Vista.

Another daft question...

I have Vista Home Premium on my laptop, but I don't have the install disc as I bought it used. It's still a valid, genuine version though. Can I buy the upgrade version but still do a clean install ?


Half tempted to not bother with MS at all and just download Ubuntu 9.10 tomorrow - FOR FREE My work laptops are better for playing games anyway
