Got my Hinds almost finished. The only new parts used, tubs, brake blocks, inner gear & brake cables, hoods & adjuster covers, chain,& bar tape (didnt get enough)Pump is non original,I could do with a better one if you have one.Chainset caps are temporary until I find some good Campag ones.
I am only the second user of this bike,I say user, because one owner sold it straight on,& the guy I bought it off never even started the refurb.First user was a works rider,so was he an owner or a user.
I also have one W.Hinds tyre cover, not ready yet, they were made from floral plastic table cloths,I kid you not.
All paint ,transfers etc all original.I just had to ride it on Saturday,& nothing fell off.Only did a few miles,as it started to snow.

Hi I used to hang around the Hinds Clapham shop on a saturday getting bits for my Holdsworth racer and later my Hinds.... The shop was just before the beginning of Acre Lane on the borders of Clapham and Brixton. It was run by a really nice guy called Ken Bird who used to go and do mechanicking for the Tour de France (or so he told us) helped by Roger Armstrong...who was younger than Ken and a penny farthing fanatic.
Their frames were lovely - the nicest in my opinion being an all chrome one with sections overpainted in a clear gold varnish.

The shop was always full of all the things a keen young cyclist liked to drool over, Campagnolo Record bits. wheels of all descriptions, sorry no photos to send

The works rider was Kevin Scrivens, who told me that Ken Bird built the bike.It was used for one event in France, about 1200 miles,& then never used again.

Hi Grumpyoldgit
small history of W Hinds cycles. they company started in about 1953 ish, the manager that started bike building for W Hinds was his old cycling mate Bill Welby(chairman of the Greenford cycling club), who I used to work with in the 50s when he left to run hinds business. head office was in Goldhawk Rd at the Acton end,
The Ealing shop was in Bond ST near the old lido cinema, as been said all the shops where originally Claud Butler shops, unfortunately Bill Welby passed away, just as it was starting to build up.

I used to visit Hinds cycles in Clapham in the late 60's early 70's. Tom and Pauline his wife was running the shop at then.
I used to help him some Saturdays and helped him build my bike frame which I still ride .

Hello, I have a 1967 W. Hinds Roady built by Ken Byrd and am looking for more info and input

before I decide what direction I'd like to go in restoring it, or....?
It has a very nice providence in that it was a custom factory built bike and raced on the "Nato cycling team" in the late 60's , was also used in the 1991 Ironman in Kona Hi.
Frame is made of Reynolds 531 tubing, Nevex lugs and magnificent wrap around seat stay.
Componentry consists primarily of time period Campy plus Brooks professional hand built leather saddle , Luxe Titan stem, M.K. Schulte S Maers Steenbergen bars.....etc.
Original owner since built from the factory. Since it's competitive career it was restored and custom painted for family use with some braze on.
For the past 20+ years the bike has been hanger art.
Looking for input from the public as to where this bikes future should point?! I have too many bikes, and am getting too old to restore them all. Should I return this bike to its familiar place on the wall or return it to it's former glory (if only in stance, if not performance).?
Cheers
