This is the HPV / special interests section.

My interest is kinetic sculpture racing. Building artistic all terrain vehicles and racing them across the most unsuitable terrain around. Teessides first race of 2015 will be on Redcar beach on 28 of June at 10;30.

I am thinking about making a walking machien in the style of Theo Jensen’s STRANDBEEST. I am undecided as to whether I should use pedals and gears to drive the crank or to replace the crank with my feet and move the legs directly.

There is already a cycle in which you use your feet directly, a sort of threewheeled arch with you hanging in a harness but as the comments to this is "you could rather walk" would apply even more when you are traversing "the most unsuitable terrain around" So either go for the walking option or build a walking machine powered by pedals and gears, you get much more power then compared to actuating the legs directly. It would be an interesting challenge of engineering to build one

I saw that a couple of years back. Absolutely awesome bit of design/engineering. Keep us posted on how your's comes along please.
