Grrrrrrr!

I've had probably about 3 months of very enjoyable commuting, with little incident. I've spotted a few numpty cyclists and had a car door open in front of me (a little girl so it doesn't really count). It's been bliss.

However, it couldn't last and it would appear silly season has started again.

Yesterday I had a close pass at speed. Grrrr. Traffic was stationary on the main road and I was approaching from a side road. When I got there a few cars were waiting to get onto the main road I pulled passed them and into the gap left by a car on the main road (a gap to let a car out of the side road). As the traffic started to move I let 2 cars out of the road I just came from. Obviously this must have pi$$ed off the guy behind me, and on a dual carriage way (with no cars to his right) he passed way too close. Grrrr. (Video will follow when I have time).

Today I had worse. Much worse.

Left the house and I had to cycle carefully as it was about -2C or so. Got onto the main roads which were ok, but obviously I had to cycle with a bit more care.
Coming off a roundabout which leads to a pinch point I take primary as I always do and I hear a car coming up behind me. No matter, there is no space to overtake, due to pinch point and cars/buses in opposite lane. But did that stop him, and the fact that the roads were a bit slippery? Oh no. The car pushed past anyway.
Now, I have had close passes in my time, but this was officially the closest. As he started passing I instinctively put my hand out towards the car. Not only did I touch it, but I got my whole bl**dy palm on his side window with a thump!:angry::angry::angry:

The car, which I now recognised as a privite hire taxi stopped further ahead (he had a lady passenger!). He rolled down his window and said 'you were in the middle of the road, you shouldn't be in the middle of the road!'

Of course I was in the middle of the road &*&&*^$!!!!!

I'll post the video of this taxi later, probably in a separate and slightly more chilled thread! Rest assured I will be following this one up with the licensing authority and possibly the police (although I might use this as more of a threat). I'll be doing my usual pushing, the licensing authority to take part in some sort of campaign. I've had enough of this sort of attitude from private hire drivers (I don't generalise as there are some great taxi drivers, but I'd bet on average they tend to cause more problems for cyclists and that is my experience).

Sorry for this post. I just had to let off steam. He really, really got my goat up this morning!!

Anyway rant over, normal service will resume....

I await another video from you mag, your contribution to the world of pinch points and close overtakes has never been surpassed.

Rants are fine... good way to get a bit of steam out of the system. And perfectly understandable when we feel threatened. Does that mean you have now got a free day?

Sorry to hear that mt.

Unrelated mostly, but there was a good programme on the telly last night about the police in Yorkshire and one policeman who had two Superbikes fitted with cameras, Sony video recorders, etc. and he was using them to pursue motorcycles who could not be caught by cars. A few exerpts of him chasing a bike doing 110 mph and also an Audi driver who was doing his best to antagonise two motorcyclists; passing too close and forcing one of the motorcyclists to take evasive action when he was in primary. It would be nice to see the same protection and law enforcement being proferred to cyclists.

Unlucky Magnatom, I've been more primary than usual the last few day and found drivers very respectful, especially WVMen. Except one idiot on Saturday who came up behind me in a car at a traffic island and when I didn't cycle over the car in front or swerve accross the icy gutter and jump the 6 inch kerb onto the footway to get out of his way and let him crash into the back of the other car, he decided to give as much horn as he could.

No at work. Anyway if I was at home I'de have to be looking after my sick wife. I'd rather be at work....:laugh:

Chris, that programme sounds like it would have been good viewing. Mmm, I wonder if Sky would be interested in doing a programme on cycle videos...

HLaB, looking at the video, I probably could have been more primary, but this chap might have driven over me!

Deep breaths, deep breaths. Its difficult not to see red when someone's just treated your life as an inconvenience.

After months of trouble free riding I had a spate of close passes/@rsey driving in December as well. People just seemed to be in an uglier mood all of a sudden. Go figure.

-2C?! Balmy weather you're having up there.

That was just a guess, it probably was colder. Does anyone know of a site where you can get historical temperature readings? I want to get all my facts right!

Good programme and as a motorcyclist myself I thought all the culprits were treated fairly. Whilst the car antagonising the bikes was at fault the two motorcyclist could have dealt with it a lot better - in the end they would have come of a lot worst if they had been pushed of the road.

I think the cops would have to use smaller scooters with cameras to give the same sort of service to cyclists in built up areas. They will need to catch the cars etc at some stage. I agree with you - this is the sort of thing the cycle campaign groups should be trying to get done. I would suspect vehicle drivers intimidate cyclists because they know they can get away with it and there is nothing to prove what they did - unless the cyclist has a head cam:laugh:

Unlucky, magna. Hope you get over it soon.
I'm guessing the driver only pulled over cos you palmed his car, right? Or was he letting his passenger out?

My own theory is that during the Christmas period your commute to work route has you mixing with folk in cars who are getting out earlier to do shopping but have no general experience in commuter traffic. They are more likely to have bad driving habits that regular commuting experience quickly irons out. Other key times are when parents get back into the thick of the traffic taking their kids to school, after a week or two rest. same happens after the summer holidays at the start of the school year.

Motorcyclists take a while to get there riding skills and reflexes up to speed when they bring their rust free steeds out of winter hibernation around springtime when all the salt has been washed of the road.

I would suspect that summer only cyclists should also take time to adjust to traffic volumes and vehicle speeds before trying to knock of minutes on their daily commute.

Maz, as soon as I had written the rant, I was over it. I'm just determined to get something positive out of it, i.e. the driver being reprimanded and maybe some form of campaign coming out of it.

Oh and crackle, before you say anything, I'm not bothered about any personal publicity, however, if it happens.....
