Actually did the course last year, the certificates took a while to catch up!
I'd wholeheartedly recommend something like this to any beginner wanting to get their hands dirty with the bike. There are many of these community groups about, I believe, and they quite often double as a LBS, as well as a source of bits and serviced s/h bikes. Course can be free depending on circumstances.

Congratulations!

These seem like a great idea. As someone with an almost pathological fear of removing wheels/tyres (my chances of getting them back on properly are zero) I should probably try and get on one myself.
Unfortunately the only ones near enough to get to are on Saturdays and I work those (and it's very difficult to get leave at the weekend). Still, I'll keep my eyes open as I guess the skills are well worth gaining.
 
Was that the Bike Inn? What circumstances are free?
