waterproof trousers

I was hoping to get away without buying any of these but the way our summer is turning out it looks like I may have no choice. I am an all year round cyclist but because I am retired can choose to cycle when it is not raining. Therefore wet weather gear is not needed.
However, I am taking part in the London to Paris charity ride at the end of the month and was hoping that, with it being summer, there would be little rain. Showers, yes, but not continual downpours. I think I may need to be prepared. I don't fancy a day of soggy shorts.
I have a few showerproof 'pocket' jackets including the latest Aldi one but nothing for my bottom half. I will be wearing bib shorts but may need waterproof trousers/overtrousers that i can take 'just in case'. Nothing expensive as this is a 'one off'.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi there, my experience of waterproof trousers is that with cheap trousers you get just as wet from the sweat that can't escape as you would by not wearing any! I purchased some gore tex trousers and they are sooooo much better however they do cost a lot more, my justification was that I would get( have had) plenty of use out of them.

Just wear Lycra leg warmers and enjoy watching everyone else fight the rain while you embrace it.. Keep top half dry tho, forget the bottom half

I don't have leg warmers(knee warmers - yes) but was thinking of packing bib tights and using those if rain was forecast for the day.
