I got soaked through on the way to work this morning (all except top half as i have a good GoreTex jacket), and I'm anticipating the same on the way home.

I have some cheapo Decathlon waterproof trousers which I generally avoid wearing as I don't like to get too sweaty.

Wondering If I should wear them today on the way home, or just resign myself to getting soaked again. After all, it's very mild...

Nothing wrong with getting wet on a short run, so long as you are warm.

I have waterproof trousers, end up just getting wet inside. I rather wear something that is thin as it dries much quicker (for the return leg home). For any other ride I just wear shorts.

Yeah, I was warm this morning up to the point I got soaked through, but by then I was nearly at work.

It's 17.5 miles; I'll see how heavy the rain is when I set off home...

I keep having a peek (there are no windows in my office) and it's persistent heavy rain. Ho hum.

I would imagine most waterproof trousers will make you a bit sweaty, I have some Night Vision ones that I have only used a couple of times, prefer just to rely on my water-repellant tights if it's only light-ish rain.

I have really thick ones for my motorbike, they work a treat! Toasty warm and bone dry.

The trouble with cycling is that you generate heat, so that limits the thickness of any waterproof layer.

Personally, I just sling a change of clothes in a bin bag and stick them in my back pack. Then it doesn't matter how wet I get! I recommend using a thin neoprene base layer - the same stuff they make wetsuits out of - it gets wet, but it keeps you nice and warm.

Yeah, I think I'll do without then jump straight in the bath when I get home...

Still hammering down. I'm not looking forward to the ride home, but it is quite exciting, like a challenge.

For me, it's all about being warm ... wet I can live with so long as I'm warm, but cold is a misery and cold-plus-wet is sense-of-humour-failure time!

I bought a pair of Altura Dryline trousers a few years ago.
Complete waste of money IMO. Unless you have thighs like a stick insect. Wore them twice and they've been in the back of the wardrobe since.
I now wear ronhill bikesters (despite the 70's PE teacher look) and/or get wet.

I only wear my waterproof trousers in extremely heavy rain in the cold. That is the only time i will have issues keeping my legs warm.

So what would be sensible for use on commutes. I have had rather poor experiences with waterproofs in the past and I wonder whether just a pair of tights would suffice in most conditions. I need a pair anyway as all I have are shorts ATM.

I remember hearing someone say that "skin is waterproof".

Given your commute I would say that is fine.

I would never bother - but then I get to have a shower and a change of clothes at the other end. The worst part is putting on a damp pair on the way home.
