Was out for a ride yesterday (first one since the 4th!!). I was coming along one road, had a good driver behind me wait for the pinch point and everything. The next driver passed a bit close. It wasn't something I'd really think of again, but the road was wide so to have given me another meter wouldn't have taken any effort rather than cutting across me on the slight bend (so it wasn't like the driver would of had to slow down).

I did a pushing out movement. I doubt they saw, but the taxi driver behind did.

He overtook (well) with his hand up across the passenger's seat. Wasn't really sure what the wave was for, but I gave a thank you type wave anyway.

Any guesses, hehe.

He thought your pushing out signal was a signal to him to go past?

I'm not sure, possibly he thought it was for him. I didn't look behind at him or anything so not sure. Oh well...he seemed to appreciate it so if that's +1 for cyclists that can only be good ;)

I suspect he was just acknowledging you - you made a gesture to give room - which he did and just waved on the way past? Motorists do it to each other all the time - especially in tight spots.
