Cycling to work last night, turned into a side road after crossing the solihull/ birmingham border and realised as my front wheel skidded away from me that solihull don't grit their side roads. Nothing broken but my rt shoulder is pretty banged up so I will not be cycling for a while. Haven't been off my bike in 30-years but that record is broken, feel a bit of a fool to be honest as I should have been more careful. To any others still cycling this weekend be careful out there

Sorry to hear about your injury and hope you're back on the bike soon. Was out this morning, great day for a ride with the sun out and no wind. Unfortunately, as soon as you leave the main roads it is treacherous. My usual route is a minor B road up a hill into open countryside, but was a no-go area today. Every run-off for the water off the hillside was frozen and hadn't seen any grit. 3 miles into the ride I saw sense and about turned .

Did the same in Bearwood this morning. Going round a bend were the council had laid fresh tarmac (really smooth) and my bike just went from under me. Skidded down the road for about 3m with my bike on top of me. Luckily there were no cars about, so I just got up, dusted off, and got back on the bike. Sporting a nice purple bruise on my hip now, other than that I'm fine. Not a scratch on the bike or my winter clothing. This is the first spill of the year, I'm sure it will not be the last to happen this winter.
