Cyclists are not as bad as public perception would have you believe.

http://www.standard.co.uk/news/lond...icycle-collisions-in-westminster-8602166.html

drivers were to blame in 68% of incidents
cyclists were responsible for only 20%.
12% both were to blame or the cause could not be attributed.

There were 133 collisions between cyclists and pedestrians in the past three years,
60% attributable to pedestrians and 40% to cyclists.

Only 8% of incidents were down to cyclists ignoring red lights.

The proportion is far too low really - from what I recall it's more like 9 in 10 collisions are the drivers' fault, so I'm sceptical of the validity of this study.

I agree. I have read studies where it was at the 80% mark and above.

The numbers are quite similar to numbers based on STAT19 data reported by the DfT every year.

If anyone has any links to sources of information that quote above 80% or 9/10 I'd like to see them. I have a collection of useful sources of objective information.

I have certainly see people/news-articles do the following equation:

100% minus %collisions-where-cyclist-at-fault = % fault of the driver.
(wrong!)

Here is the popularly used quote from previous DfT research:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/dec/15/cycling-bike-accidents-study
"With adult cyclists, police found the driver solely responsible in about 60%-75% of all cases, and riders solely at fault 17%-25% of the time."

There's a chunk of collisions with mixed fault.

You get similar proportions from all the available sources of data.

There was a phone-in on this on BBC London radio on Friday, I only caught 5 mins of it but it was basically a load of motorists going on about pavement cycling, RLJ'rs. I'm sure they had some cyclists ring up later for balance.

Also, the figure of 133 collisions is obviously just the reported incidents, I imagine the real figure is dramatically a lot higher.

The fact is, it doesn't matter who's 'fault' it is, most of these incidents are entirely avoidable if motorists, cyclists and pedestrians realised that they don't exist in isolation and begin showing a little care & consideration (and obeying the law might help a bit too.)
