Is this a dumb idea? I just thought that it would keep me warm in the rain and cold and the eternal sweat inside a so called waterproof jacket issue would.be gone...not sure if snorkel and flippers on the high street would work though !

Not sure how practical it is. Sean Yates used to wear one on long wet training rides, apparently.

Wetsuits are windproof but wearing a wet one in a wind will result in the the user getting chilled really quickly. This can be felt quite markedly in places as warm as the Red Sea; in the UK in winter you'd be hypothermic in minutes.

Plus, you'd look a right prat!

I wear wetsuits when kayaking and believe me the wind cuts right through them, the only way to stop it is to put a sailing smock or cag over the top.

it might come in through the seams or via conduction, but neoprene itself is a windproof material. Maybe you are confusing it with a string vest.

You'd absolutely get sweaty if you wore a wetsuit, it's the moisture inside that will keep you warm though. Just look at how neoprene cycling gloves and overshoes work if you're worried about being cold in one.

To settle this I have just attempted to suck and blow through my neoprene overshoe material. They offer some wind resistance but I would not describe them as fully windproof like the windproof panels in my softshell. So you are both right to an extent

I can't beleive I just did that:wacko:

well, regardless of your 'scientific' experiment - it doesn't alter the fact that neoprene is a windproof material. No point sitting on the fence about it - the only answer that is 'right' to any extent is that neoprene is windproof. That's not the same as saying it will keep you warm though.

My neoprene overshoes are great, not sure I'd want to cycle in a wetsuit though. I would assume it would get very wet and sweaty inside.
