What is going on?
Not one close pass today, some of the most courteous driving I have seen in a while.
There are two proper hills on my route, Ok - a warm up hill and a proper hill.
I got to the warm up hill and a bin lorry caught up behind me. I was expecting an overtake at any moment but he stayed behind me for the whole hill (a bit over ½ mile – 14-16 mph).
When I got to the bottom of the big hill a fairly old digger turned onto the hill behind me, there is a nasty bend at the start of the hill and I wanted to be past it before he overtook me so I put a bit of effort in. Past the bend I realised that I was dropping him (at 10mph!). Over the top of the hill I never saw him again!
Now the question.
The digger was going slower than me on a 60mph road with good overtaking opportunities; cars regularly pass me with minimal space and no reduction in speed. Why was there a queue of cars behind the digger, despite opportunity to pass? I think only one car came past him.
