Actually best to work from the ground up and identify anything you know you want, or don't want, on a bike. Types of handlebars, frame clearance for tyres, wheel size, frame material, fork material, ability to fit mudguards and racks, these can all have a heavy influence. Your intended useage will have a big impact on what you need in these areas. But there's no substitute for experience and, once you've done a few hundred miles, your views on suitable bikes for you may alter. Unless you really know what you want I'd avoid spending big bucks on the first one. Maybe get a reasonable all rounder for up to £400 from
EBC or
Decathlon. If you get in to cycling you'll want something nicer, and have a better idea of what, and you can then use the cheaper one as a do it all, leave outside shops/pubs bike.
