Hey guys. So this is a massively open question I know but my work has just signed up to the bike to work scheme and I am looking at getting some gear. I am thinking of getting a bike, helmet, lights, lock, waterproof hivis jacket, lycra shorts, shorts, panier, some locking road shoes & pedals and a pump.
So my question is, which bike? I can sort the rest as it is mainly done on price (I.e. the pedals are £40 or £100, so £40).
Have no idea about bikes at all so would like some advice. I'm thinking a full road bike and I think it's between the Carrera Virtuoso Road Bike, Raleigh Revenio 2 Road Bike or the Boardman Road Sport 2014 but obviously any comments would be welcomed. I've read reviews but they all seem to get ok reviews for the price.

Thanks for your help in advance.

You aren't limited to Halfords, I believe you register with them but can use a local bike shop that's affiliated to the Halfords C2W scheme so you can choose loads of other makes of bike

You can, here's how: http://www.cycle2work.info/siteadvicecentrebrand#IBD

But....

It might be worth sticking with Halfords as my employer has a deal where you get 15% of the value of the voucher to spend again on accessories, it could mean for instance if you take a £500 bike you get an extra £75 to spend on the bits you'll need. Do check first as I dont know if you will get that.

Hlafords can get a wide range of other brands through C2W , i nearly went for a cannondale but opted for the boardman as it offered the best bang for your buck.
The Boardmans are better than the carrera , but the raliegh seems to have the best spec and has a carbon fork to soak up road buzz , pity its unavailable atm.

Really? So now it really is an open question. Which bike for under £600? Probably a road bike but I haven't ridden a bike in about 5 years So can't even say for certain. In some ways it might be easier as I can look at all reviews. So you think a full road bike is the way to go our a hybrid?

I'd go for a road bike if you intend to ride on roads, as you can position your hands in a number of different positions.

I got a boardman hybrid initially a few years ago, but it's not relegated to an ice/winter bike.

Whats your budget for the bike and what sort of riding do you want to do ?

Well £800 for all gear, maybe slightly more so£600 fir bike and it is a 7 mile commute to work, that the main aim the moment but would use it the odd cycle the weekend, probably and cycle path. I'm in Bristol.

For that money at Halford's I'd be looking at the best Boardman I could afford, which looks like the Road Comp @ £699.

Gives you enough left over to get the accessories you'd need to get you started.

Have you tried Edinburgh cycle co-op, they are in the c2w scheme and give 10% back to spend in store when you spend over £300.
