Hi All i am new to the cycling scene and although i have a mountain bike for recreational use i have got the urge now to purchase a road bike to get into the hobby more seriously.

First thing i am also looking to do this to get fitter and i am mid 40's.

i dont know whether to hold off and buy a carbon bike or get a good alu one ?

choices that have taken my eye so far are below.

Willier GTR 2014 with veloce group set at £1499

Specialized Allez sport 2014 with Sora groupset £750

Willier Montegrappa with 105 groupset £999

Any help would be greatly appreciated as at this stage i am so undecided if a carbon bike although looks the part would i really benefit from it ?

Well if money is no object the Willier GTR would get you through a 100 mile sportive a bit quicker & would be a more pleasant ride. However there's nothing wrong with The Allez for a first road bike of a man in 40's looking to get fitter!

As you say you are in your 40s and want to get fitter I would suggest an endurance road bike. These are not so racey, but more upright and more comfortable. Cannndale have the Synapse, and specialized have the Roubaix. If you can got to £1500 for the GTR, I would suggest that another £100 would be well spent to getting this...

It has "Zertz" on the forks and seatstays that help take the edge off road buzz, and this one is mostly shimano 105.
