Hi All,

Always been an everyday cyclist but during the particularly harsh winter this year I got off the bike and into the car. Now I can't be bothered to cycle to work anymore.

How can I overcome this dip in my lust for cycling?

look at the petrol prices work out how much you will save and treat yourself with the savings or better still tell your significant other you will treat them and see how quick they hide the car keys:laugh:

yes, sometimes I really don't fancy it but ten minutes in I love it and it all clicks into place

you really have to sort out kit for bad weather than you're happy with, gloves, top layer, overshoes, whatever

anyhow, this is (nearly) the best time of the year, some of the mornings have been a delight, granted this week looks less than brill

Getting out the door is always tough, but once you get over that 5 minutes down the road I always find myself thinking how much I love riding.

Hi Buzzy.

I eased up considerably over the winter and also found it really hard to get back into it in the new year. I dont think there is a magic bullet answer here and trying to "convince yourself" often just dosent work.

Personally...I just let it go and carried on driving (and taking the motorbike) until I just got bored of that, realised how much I missed the pushbike and got on it again one morning.

I found that "wanting" to ride was the best way to get back on.Pushing myself to ride, just resulted in a miserable (cold and wet) journey. I have to say as well, that the lighter evenings (and mornings) make it a lot more enjoyable to be on a bike.

so, my advice, keep taking the car untill it drives you mad and then getting back on the bike (when you want to) will be an enjoyable experience...take your time

Take your shirt off. Look in the mirror and see what a lard a8se you've become.

Also, rejoice in the fact that you're a non-conformist like those caged motorists.

Reminds me of the Life of Brian quote...

"We ARE individuals"
"I'm not"

+1 Forcing anything feels like a chore.

To help me along, I use pay as you go oyster when I need to get the train in and I always have just enough on it to get me to Fenchurch Street only. Then I have to put £10 - £15 on it each day I take the train to make sure I can get home ok and in the next morning. That always makes me wish I'd cycled in!

"What Can I Do to Make Me Ride".

Send me your address and I'll have a couple of mates come round to your house and persuade you to get back on your bike.

Every single morning I think "I can't be bothered to ride today" and every single journey - about 10 minutes in - I have forgotton that feeling!

Think of the weight gain if you don't do it?!

Do you have a routine which makes it easy to get on the bike without thinking in the morning? I used to pack my kit in the morning before leaving the house - too much thinking! When I started packing in the evening after dinner it became a lot easier (not least because I got out of the washing up...)

I thhink the secret is that the incremental cost of cycling in the morning needs to be as low as possible.
