I recently bought some Skins bib shorts from Chain Reaction at a very good price; they are far and away the most comfortable cycling shorts I have ever worn (inc. Assos, Pearl Izumi and Sugoi), consequently I wondered why they were being sold at a clearance price. I read the reviews at CR and one guy mentioned the yellow stitching which in fairness does add some unnecessary flash in my opinion and perhaps explains it.
So my question is: how important is the way you look and is there a conflict between looks and practicality, including comfort?

never cared what I look like - comfort. I even toured in lycra & wear in on mtb as well.
I will conceed though that I am not that comfortable wearing my yellow Assos shorts outside because the fabric is clearly see through and it is obvious I am 'commando', so they are currently for turbo trainer use only with curtians closed!

The only occasions I try not to look like I've cycled there  is when I meet friends in town for a girlie day put.
On the commute, anything that keeps me warm, dry and visible goes.

My daughter thinks I look like a cross between a gay goth pirate and Freddy Murcuries camper friend when I wear lycra longs
Doesnt stop me though

You should take her to the cyclists cafe in Holmfirth then - or better, the Windmills cafe up the hill from Holmfirth at Royd Moor on a Sat 10.30am.

She'd see LOTS of gay goth pirate/Freddy Mercury friend lookalikes in all colours.

Come to think of it, one wears a pirate cap too!

I've heard that skins sales plummeted due to the shooting in Norway - the shooter being plastered all over the media basically advertising the brand. I've also noticed the price of skins seems to have been lower, more things on sale etc. Could be something in it

I don't understand why people are so easily put off of a brand like that, but what you say re. the prices adds up, Skins used to be disproportionately expensive.

I look exactly like what I am a fat man in Lycra, does it bother me? No as a year a go I was a very fat man in Lycra. I didn't care then, still don't care now. My Family, now that is different, my teen-aged daughter thinks I should only cycle after dark and only somewhere none of her friends or their parents can see me.

The other day after peeling off my lycra to reveal my white thermals my wife said I only needed a pair of old wellies to look just like Compo fro last of the summer wine! Do I care? Not a bit!!!
