This just came up in the recomended vids on youtube:

Now two things strike me. The motorbiker is a bit of a plum (ranting about insurance, not reading the road ahead very well). Secondly is this technically illegal - one cyclist in the cyclelane, an two in the road? The HC says to ride no more than two abreast in the road could the cyclelane be defined as a separate lane here or the same under the RTAct?

Selfish and inconsiderate cycling that people will tar all cyclist with. HC says:

never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends

For road traffic law, the road is edge to edge and includes the cycle lane marked on it.

The car driver was lucky he didn't meet a fast motorcyclist head on, and the horn sound was appropriate but ignored.
Just more ammo for the anti's.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone here, but doesn't the HC say "You should..." not "You Must...". Therefore, its not backed up by law and therefore not "illegal"?

Oh THAT one...

I notice where his speedo is when the vid cuts and I reckon he's still accellerating. Pot, Kettle, Black where the rules of the road are concerned I reckon

Still, they should have singled out.

Then kept primary*

* just a joke, but law aside, in SOME situations the 3 abreast thing seems a little silly when a lone cyclist ought to be somewhere roughly where the offside rider would be in a 3 abreast formation

Ha! Yes th video has been edited very carefully so as not to show a sped above 60mph!

To be honest, I wouldn't want to be cycling three abreast there. It looks lke the sort of road that is quite fast and might have tight bends. Save the chatting for the cake stop, I say!

Cheers everyone! Its not ofetn a video throws me like that, usually I can find reliable info to back something up or disprove it, but here it was a little elusive. I think personally I wouldnt hold three or even two abreast there legal or not as its too bendy, and I guess a few motorists will be testing the capabilities of their vehicle a little more than they should.

edit: and I notice the biker didnt leave much space on the overtake...

The HC may say don't do it... but would it have made much difference to what happened? the car and motorbike still would have had to slowed if they were riding two abreast and moved in the other lane to overtake safely... just arguing over nothing imo.

True, you should .... never ride more than two abreast", but para 68 sayeth:-

"You must not ... ride in a dangerous, careless or inconsiderate manner".

That covers it, I'd say.
